The Lord Of The Rings Confrontation Board Game
The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson, gained acclaim for sweating the details. Every bit of costuming, set dressing, and dialogue was precise enough to satisfy notoriously picky Tolkein aficionados and also accessible enough to delight the general public. This two-player board game is nowhere near as intricate as other LOTR tie-in items, but the look is just as magical thanks in large part to illustrations by renowned Tolkein artist John Howe and a game design by Reiner Knizia. Players can either take the role of the hobbits traveling from the Shire all the way to Mordor or, because sometimes being evil is fun, assume the identity of Sauron himself on a mission to stop those pesky hobbits and reclaim the ring. The game takes about 30 minutes to play, considerably shorter than watching any of the films. --Charlie Williams

Lord of The Rings-The Hobbit Board Game
Journey to Middle-earth to defeat the evil dragon Smaug in this unique and beautifully illustrated board game based on The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien's predecessor to The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Unlike most games, where players try to defeat one another, players must work together here in order to be victorious. While traveling the game board, they face challenges of luck, skill, and wit as they gather precious jewels. Game play is complex and, though you need not have read the book before playing the game, those who have read it will likely appreciate the game a bit more. But like any good game, it gets more exciting as you go along and the cooperative angle is a welcome change of pace. --John Moe

The Lord Of The Rings Sauron Expansion Set Board Game
Okay look, we've all seen the movies, many of us have read the books, and plenty of us have already played the incredibly cool Lord of the Rings board game designed by Reiner Knizia. And while the determined pluck of the hobbits is obviously worthy of admiration, haven't you ever thought there was something kind of cool about Sauron? Sure you might not want to admit it, or maybe you do, but the guy is in at least a partially sympathetic spot. He just wants to rule all of creation and to do that, all he needs to do is pry some jewelry away from a hobbit. With this Sauron expansion set to the original board game, players can get their chance to play the bad guy himself, employ the Black Rider, and rule them all. But beware: with this set, the pesky hobbits have some new weapons of their own. The set includes 30 Sauron cards, nine Nazgul cards, and five Fellowship cards. It's not capable of being played on its own but makes a great counterpart, and counterpoint, to the original board game. --Charlie Williams

Lord of the Rings Checkers Tin
One doesn''t really think of checkers when it comes to the saga of The Lord of the Rings. Just doesn''t seem epic enough. Chess? Sure. A sort of Middle Earth version of Monopoly? Yeah, Frodo, Gandalf, and the gang would probably be into that as well. But checkers just seems to lack the grandeur, majesty, and raw time commitment one normally associates with the Tolkein brand. All the same, this is an attractive and understated checkers set that LOTR fans will appreciate. 12 gold and 12 silver plastic rings are included, each with Elven writing on it (wasn''t the whole idea that there was supposed to be just the one ring?). The game board, which folds into quarters, shows a map of middle earth. It''s all stored inside a tin carrying case, perfect for extraordinarily lengthy trips that take three long films to complete. --Charlie Williams

RISK - The Lord of the Rings Edition
Fans of the board game Risk will find this Lord of the Rings edition--the Middle-earth version--thoroughly familiar. But there are all sorts of new opportunities and dangers here in the form of wizards, Orcs, cave trolls, and the One True Ring--the latter a gold-colored pewter replica. The four colored armies of plastic game pieces are rather small and cheaply produced, but the 20-by-20-inch game board and 40 adventure cards have a higher-quality feel and are beautifully designed. The game proceeds on the roll of two red and three black dice, and the object, of course, is control of Middle-earth. Recommended for two to four Hobbits; second breakfast not included. (Ages 9 and older) --Richard Farr
